Product Description
Sodium Hexametaphosphate (SHMP, Sodium Polyphosphate, Calgon) is a polyphosphate salt with exceptional sequestering, dispersing, peptising, and threshold scale-inhibition properties. In water treatment, SHMP is one of the most effective scale inhibitors available — it sequesters calcium and magnesium ions at very low dosages (1–5 ppm) to prevent carbonate and sulphate scale formation in pipes, boilers, and cooling towers. In food applications (E452i), it acts as an emulsifier, moisture-retention agent, and texture modifier in processed cheese, seafood, and poultry. In ceramics and tile manufacturing, it disperses clay and kaolin slurries, reducing viscosity. MITCHEM supplies food and industrial grades with full documentation.
Applications by Industry
Threshold scale inhibitor at 1–5 ppm doses in potable water, boiler feed water, and cooling water systems; sequesters Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ to prevent carbonate, phosphate, and sulphate scale formation.
Emulsifier and moisture-retention agent in processed cheese (prevents oil-off and texture breakdown), canned seafood (reduces drip loss), and restructured meat products.
Water softener and builder in industrial cleaning compounds and machine dishwash formulations; sequesters hardness ions that would otherwise inactivate surfactants.
Deflocculant for ceramic slip casting — reduces the viscosity of high-solids clay and kaolin slurries, enabling casting at lower water content for improved piece strength and faster drying.
