Potassium Chloride
KCl | CAS: 7447-40-7 | HS: 28271000
Product Description
Potassium Chloride (Muriate of Potash, MOP) is the world's most widely used potassium fertiliser, providing essential potassium for crop growth, photosynthesis, and disease resistance at a lower cost per unit K₂O than any other potassium source. Agricultural MOP (60% K₂O) is applied to chloride-tolerant crops including cereals, maize, sugarcane, and oil palm. Beyond agriculture, pharmaceutical and food-grade KCl serves as a sodium chloride substitute in low-sodium diets (E508), as an electrolyte replenisher in IV solutions and oral rehydration salts, and as a raw material for potassium hydroxide and potassium carbonate production by electrolysis. MITCHEM supplies all three grades with appropriate documentation for each end use.
Applications by Industry
Primary source of potassium (K) nutrition for chloride-tolerant crops; applied as a basal fertiliser or top-dress to cereals, maize, sugarcane, oil palm, and cotton to improve yield and stress resistance.
Used as a partial or complete replacement for sodium chloride in low-sodium foods, salt blends, and processed meats; provides salty taste perception at lower cardiovascular risk.
Potassium electrolyte in IV infusion fluids, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and pharmaceutical formulations; USP/BP grade required for all parenteral applications.
Feedstock for the production of potassium hydroxide (KOH) via electrolysis, potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃), and potassium nitrate; basis of the entire downstream potassium chemical chain.
