Calcium Chloride
CaCl₂ | CAS: 10043-52-4 | HS: 28272000
Product Description
Calcium Chloride is an exothermic, highly hygroscopic calcium salt with the highest water absorption capacity of any common industrial salt — a property that makes it the leading industrial desiccant, de-icing agent, and dust control chemical. Its exothermic dissolution makes it effective at much lower temperatures than NaCl for road de-icing. In food applications (E509), it is used as a firming agent in canned vegetables, cheese production (milk coagulant), and tofu. In oil and gas, dense CaCl₂ brines serve as high-density completion fluids. MITCHEM supplies flakes, granules, and powder grades with full documentation.
Applications by Industry
The most effective solid de-icing salt at temperatures below –15°C; its exothermic dissolution accelerates ice melting and the liquid formed depresses freezing point further than NaCl.
Used in gas drying (natural gas pipelines), dehumidification of warehouses and storage areas, and as a moisture-absorbing filler in shipping containers (desiccant bags).
Applied as a firming agent in canned tomatoes, pickles, and vegetables; used as a coagulant in cheese making (added to pasteurised milk) and as a tofu coagulant.
CaCl₂ brines at 10–15 lb/gal density are used as clear, solids-free wellbore completion and workover fluids to prevent formation damage.
