Phosphoric Acid
H₃PO₄ | CAS: 7664-38-2 | HS: 28092000
Product Description
Phosphoric Acid is the gateway compound to all phosphate chemistry — a medium-strength acid produced from phosphate rock via the wet or thermal process, consumed primarily in fertiliser manufacturing and increasingly in food processing and metal surface treatment. Food-grade H₃PO₄ (E338) is used as an acidulant in cola beverages, providing the characteristic sharp phosphate taste distinct from citric acid. In metal treatment it forms iron phosphate conversion coatings (phosphating) that improve corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. MITCHEM exports technical and food grades with full specifications.
Applications by Industry
Reacts with ammonia to produce MAP, DAP, and other phosphate fertilisers; also used to produce potassium phosphates for specialty fertilisers and STPP.
Reacts with iron and steel surfaces to form iron phosphate conversion coatings that inhibit corrosion and improve paint adhesion in automotive and industrial finishing.
Used as the unique sharp acidulant in cola-type soft drinks, providing the characteristic phosphate tartness; also used in food processing for pH adjustment.
Feedstock for producing sodium tripolyphosphate, trisodium phosphate, monosodium phosphate, and other phosphate compounds for detergent, food, and industrial applications.
