Iron Oxide
Fe₂O₃ | FeOOH | Fe₃O₄ | Fe₂O₃/FeOOH (blend)
Product Overview
Iron Oxide pigments are among the oldest and most widely used inorganic colour pigments — valued for their outstanding lightfastness, heat stability, opacity, non-toxicity, and weatherfastness across construction, coatings, plastics, cosmetics, and ceramics. Available in four principal colours based on chemical form and crystal structure: Red (α-Fe₂O₃, haematite), Yellow (α-FeOOH, goethite), Black (Fe₃O₄, magnetite), and Brown (mixed Fe₂O₃/FeOOH). MITCHEM exports synthetic iron oxide pigments to paint manufacturers, concrete producers, and cosmetic ingredient suppliers with full compliance documentation.
Iron Oxide Red
Fe₂O₃Technical Specifications
| Formula | Fe₂O₃ |
|---|---|
| CAS Number | 1309-37-1 |
| Molecular Weight | 159.69 g/mol |
| Appearance | Red to dark red powder; density 5.26 g/cm³; haematite crystal structure |
| Available Grades | 95%+ Fe₂O₃ / High Purity 98% |
Applications
Primary red-brown colouring pigment in concrete blocks, paving tiles, coloured concrete, and cementitious products; weather-fast and alkali-stable throughout service life.
Used in anti-corrosion primers, roof coatings, marine coatings, and decorative paints; the outstanding lightfastness and UV stability of haematite red makes it suitable for exterior applications.
Heat-stable to 300°C+ makes it suitable for colouring engineering plastics, rubber goods, and high-temperature processing applications where organic pigments would degrade.
Cosmetic-grade iron oxide red (CI 77491) is used in foundations, blushers, eye shadows, and lipsticks as a skin-safe inorganic colourant with regulatory approval in all major markets.
Iron Oxide Yellow
FeOOHTechnical Specifications
| Formula | FeOOH |
|---|---|
| CAS Number | 51274-00-1 |
| Molecular Weight | 88.85 g/mol |
| Appearance | Yellow powder; density 4.0 g/cm³; goethite crystal structure |
| Available Grades | 85%+ FeOOH / Synthetic grade |
Applications
Provides yellow to ochre coloration in coloured concrete, mortar, roof tiles, and paving — fully alkali-stable and weather-resistant in alkaline cementitious environments.
Yellow and ochre shades in interior and exterior decorative coatings; provides excellent colour consistency and lightfastness for architectural applications.
Approved cosmetic colourant in foundations, concealer, and skin-tone cosmetic products; non-toxic, inert, and stable over broad pH range — safe for skin-contact applications.
Used as a yellow-brown colourant in ceramic glazes, floor tiles, and vitreous enamel — decomposes to Fe₂O₃ red at high temperatures.
Iron Oxide Black
Fe₃O₄Technical Specifications
| Formula | Fe₃O₄ |
|---|---|
| CAS Number | 1317-61-9 |
| Molecular Weight | 231.53 g/mol |
| Appearance | Black powder; density 5.18 g/cm³; magnetite crystal structure; magnetic properties |
| Available Grades | 95%+ Fe₃O₄ / Synthetic grade |
Applications
Provides jet black to charcoal colouration in concrete tiles, paving stones, and asphalt mixtures; blended with red and yellow to produce brown and grey concrete shades.
Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are used in magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) printing for bank cheques and in legacy magnetic recording media.
Used as a black colourant in eyeliner, mascara, kohl, and eye shadow formulations; approved cosmetic colourant for eye area use in major regulatory markets.
Applied in high-solid protective coatings for pipelines and structural steel, providing barrier protection and a neutral dark appearance compatible with topcoat application.
Iron Oxide Brown
Fe₂O₃/FeOOH (blend)Technical Specifications
| Formula | Fe₂O₃/FeOOH (blend) |
|---|---|
| CAS Number | Mixture |
| Molecular Weight | Variable |
| Appearance | Brown powder; shade varies from yellow-brown to dark reddish-brown depending on blend ratio |
| Available Grades | Synthetic blend grade / Technical |
Applications
Brown shades achieved by blending red and yellow iron oxides or by use of specific synthetic brown grades for concrete blocks, pavers, and cementitious tiles.
Used in wood stains, terracotta effect coatings, and earthy-tone interior and exterior decorative paints where warm brown colour palettes are required.
Traditional brown colourant for stoneware pottery and floor tile glazes; produces warm amber and brown tones in oxidising and reducing kiln atmospheres.
Iron oxide brown pigments form the basis of artist's earth colours including Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, and Burnt Umber in oil, acrylic, and watercolour paints.
