Chlorosulphonic Acid
ClSO₃H | CAS: 7790-94-5 | HS: 28061000
Product Description
Chlorosulphonic Acid (Chlorosulfuric Acid) is a highly reactive and corrosive sulphonating and chlorosulphonating agent — the most powerful commercially available sulphonation reagent. Its primary industrial role is in the manufacture of surfactants via sulphonation of linear alkylbenzene (LAB) to produce LABSA, the backbone of most liquid and powder detergents worldwide. It is also the key intermediate for saccharin (artificial sweetener) synthesis, sulphonamide antibiotics, and numerous specialty dye intermediates. When used in chlorosulphonation reactions, it introduces the –SO₂Cl group onto organic substrates. MITCHEM supplies technical-grade chlorosulphonic acid in HDPE-lined, nitrogen-blanketed steel drums with full hazardous materials documentation.
Applications by Industry
Reacts with linear alkylbenzene (LAB) via sulphonation to produce LABSA — the primary anionic surfactant raw material for liquid dish soaps, laundry detergents, and household cleaners worldwide.
Key intermediate in the Remsen–Fahlberg saccharin synthesis (artificial sweetener) and in producing sulphonamide antibiotics including sulfanilamide, sulfadiazine, and related compounds.
Used to introduce sulphonic acid or sulphonyl chloride groups into aromatic dye intermediates; enables synthesis of reactive dyes, optical brighteners, and sulphonic acid-based pigments.
Used in the production of ion-exchange resins, herbicide intermediates (chlorosulphuron group), and specialty polymers requiring sulphonyl chloride functional groups.
