Strontium Sulphate

SrSO₄  |  CAS: 7759-02-6  |  HS: 28332990

Product Description

Strontium Sulphate is a dense, chemically inert white powder primarily used as a weighting agent in oil and gas drilling fluids (as an alternative to barite), and as a pigment extender in specialty paints and pyrotechnic compositions. Its high specific gravity and low solubility make it well-suited for borehole stability applications. MITCHEM supplies technical and high-purity grades with appropriate certifications for export to drilling fluid suppliers and specialty paint manufacturers.

Applications by Industry

Oil & Gas Drilling Fluids

Used as a weighting agent and density-control additive in drilling mud formulations, particularly in sulphate-tolerant well environments where barite may cause scale issues.

Pyrotechnics

Provides strontium ions and sulphate oxygen source in specialty pyrotechnic delay compositions and red-colour formulations.

Specialty Pigments & Paints

Used as a white extender pigment with higher specific gravity than barium sulphate, in specialty industrial coatings requiring high-density fillers.

Strontium Chemical Synthesis

Serves as a starting material for producing other strontium compounds through double decomposition reactions.
