Sodium Chlorate
NaClO₃ | CAS: 7775-09-9 | HS: 28291100
Product Description
Sodium Chlorate is one of the most important industrial oxidising agents — the primary feedstock for electrolytic chlorine dioxide production in large-scale pulp bleaching operations. The vast majority of global sodium chlorate production is consumed by the pulp and paper industry to generate ClO₂ for Elemental Chlorine-Free bleaching. It is also used as a non-selective herbicide (in markets where registered) and as an oxidising agent in fireworks and pyrotechnics. MITCHEM supplies technical and pulp-grade sodium chlorate with full hazardous goods documentation.
Applications by Industry
Electrochemically reduced to chlorine dioxide in dedicated ClO₂ generators; the dominant application globally accounting for ~90% of sodium chlorate consumption.
ClO₂ generated from sodium chlorate is the bleaching agent in ECF (Elemental Chlorine-Free) sequences — the industry standard for bleaching Kraft pulp in developed markets.
Used as a strong oxidising agent in the production of other chlorine-based chemicals and in specialty oxidation reactions requiring stable, solid-form oxidants.
Applied as a non-selective herbicide for total vegetation control (roadsides, railways, industrial sites) in markets where registered and approved.
