Potassium Permanganate
KMnO₄ | CAS: 7722-64-7 | HS: 28418000
Product Description
Potassium Permanganate is one of the strongest and most versatile oxidising agents in industrial chemistry — distinguished by its deep violet colour, which acts as a self-indicating endpoint marker in reactions and analytical titrations. In water treatment, KMnO₄ oxidises soluble iron and manganese to insoluble precipitates for filtration removal, and controls taste, odour, and colour compounds in drinking water. In chemical synthesis it is a powerful oxidant for producing carboxylic acids, aldehydes, and specialty intermediates. MITCHEM supplies technical and water treatment grades with full safety documentation.
Applications by Industry
Oxidises soluble Fe²⁺ and Mn²⁺ to insoluble Fe³⁺ and MnO₂, enabling removal by filtration; used in municipal water treatment for taste, odour, and colour control.
Used as a primary oxidant in the synthesis of carboxylic acids (oxidising alkyl side chains and aldehydes), saccharin, and specialty organic intermediates.
Dilute KMnO₄ solutions are used in wound irrigation, treatment of fungal skin infections, and as an antiseptic foot bath — a longstanding medical application.
Applied for oxidative treatment of industrial effluents containing phenols, cyanides, and organics; effective for wastewater decolourisation and toxicant oxidation.
