Potassium Perchlorate
KClO₄ | CAS: 7778-74-7 | HS: 28291900
Product Description
Potassium Perchlorate is the preferred oxidiser for safety-critical pyrotechnic applications where the greater thermal stability of the perchlorate versus chlorate is essential. Unlike potassium chlorate, KClO₄ requires significantly higher temperatures to release oxygen, making it less shock-sensitive and safer to formulate in compositions involving fuels and colour-producing metals. It has become the standard oxidiser in automotive airbag inflators, aerospace solid propellants, and pyrotechnic delay elements. MITCHEM supplies under applicable explosive precursor regulations.
Applications by Industry
Preferred oxidiser over chlorate in compositions involving metal powders (Mg, Al) due to lower shock sensitivity; standard in aerial shells, salutes, and colour compositions.
Used as an oxidiser in pyrotechnic gas generators for automotive airbag inflator systems; enables rapid, controlled gas generation on impact.
Component in composite solid rocket propellant formulations alongside HTPB binders and aluminium fuel for aerospace and defence applications.
Used in delay columns and fuse elements for mining, quarrying, and industrial blasting where timed sequential detonation is required.
