Nitric Acid
HNO₃ | CAS: 7697-37-2 | HS: 28080000
Product Description
Nitric Acid is a major industrial acid and the foundational feedstock for the global nitrogen explosives and fertiliser industries. Over 80% of nitric acid production is consumed in ammonium nitrate production (fertiliser and explosives), with the balance used in nitration reactions for organic chemistry (TNT, MDI precursors, dyes), stainless steel passivation and pickling, and precious metal refining. Fuming nitric acid is a powerful oxidiser used in rocket propellants. MITCHEM supplies concentrated and dilute grades with full hazmat documentation for chemical, metallurgical, and industrial users.
Applications by Industry
Reacts with ammonia to produce ammonium nitrate — the world's most widely used nitrogen fertiliser and the primary oxidiser in ANFO (ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) mining explosives.
Used alone or in HNO₃/HF mixtures for descaling and passivating stainless steel welds, castings, and machined surfaces — restoring the chromium oxide passive layer.
Reagent in nitration reactions producing nitro compounds: TNT, nitroglycerine, nitrocellulose, MDI/TDI precursors, azo dyes, and pharmaceutical nitro-group intermediates.
Mixed with HCl (1:3 ratio) to form aqua regia, capable of dissolving gold, platinum, and palladium for refining and analytical dissolution of noble metals.
