Sodium Metabisulphite
Na₂S₂O₅ | CAS: 7681-57-4 | HS: 28321000
Product Description
Sodium Metabisulphite is the highest-sulphite-content solid sulphite compound — releasing SO₂ in acidic conditions or on contact with moisture, making it the preferred solid sulphite for wine preservation, food sanitation, water dechlorination, and gold leaching. In winemaking, it is the universal sulphiting agent for sanitising equipment, inhibiting wild yeast and bacteria, and protecting wine from oxidation during production and storage. In gold mining, it is used for precious metal precipitation from cyanide leach solutions. MITCHEM supplies food and technical grades with full compliance documentation.
Applications by Industry
Standard sulphiting agent in winemaking for equipment sanitation, must treatment, and wine preservation — inhibits wild yeast and acetic acid bacteria, prevents oxidative browning.
Used for precipitation of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions in heap leach and CIP/CIL gold mining operations; reacts with gold-cyanide complex to precipitate metallic gold.
Fast-acting reducing agent for chlorine and chloramine removal from potable water, wastewater, and industrial process streams; commonly used in aquaculture and effluent treatment.
Inhibits enzymatic browning in cut fruits, vegetables, seafood, and potato products; applied as a dip, spray, or inclusion in food preservation formulations.
