Lithium Nitrate
LiNO₃ | CAS: 7790-69-4 | HS: 28342990
Product Description
Lithium Nitrate has emerged as a critical component in molten salt heat transfer and thermal energy storage systems for concentrated solar power (CSP) plants — a rapidly growing application driven by the global clean energy transition. In ternary or binary molten salt blends (KNO₃-NaNO₃-LiNO₃), it lowers the salt mixture's melting point, extending the operating range of solar thermal storage systems. It is also used as an oxidiser in specialty pyrotechnics and red-colour signal compositions. MITCHEM supplies technical and solar grades with full CoA and purity documentation.
Applications by Industry
LiNO₃ is a key component in ternary molten salt mixtures (solar salt formulations) for thermal energy storage in CSP plants; its addition lowers the eutectic melting point, improving round-the-clock solar energy dispatch capability.
Lithium nitrate-based molten salt blends are used as industrial heat transfer media in high-temperature process heating systems as alternatives to thermal oils.
Functions as an oxidiser and red-colour source in pyrotechnic compositions; particularly effective at lower temperatures where barium or strontium salts may not provide optimal performance.
Used as a lithium source and mild oxidant in organic and inorganic chemical synthesis, and as a precursor in lithium compound manufacturing.
Used in absorption refrigeration systems and as an additive to LiBr solutions to improve system performance at lower evaporator temperatures.
