Copper Stearate
Cu(C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂ | CAS: 660-60-6 | HS: 29157090
Product Description
Copper Stearate is a copper metallic soap used as an antifouling biocide in marine coatings, a catalyst in certain polymer and rubber systems, and as a copper-delivery compound in agricultural formulations. In marine antifouling coatings, its slow release of soluble copper ions from the fatty acid matrix provides a sustained biocidal effect against barnacle, algae, and fouling organism settlement on ship hulls, boat bottoms, and underwater structures. Its hydrophobic nature and compatibility with coating resins make it more paint-compatible than inorganic copper compounds. MITCHEM supplies technical grade with full documentation.
Applications by Industry
Biocidal pigment in ablative and contact-leaching antifouling paints for ship hulls, yacht bottoms, and marine structures — releases Cu²⁺ ions that prevent barnacle and fouling organism settlement.
Applied as a copper-based wood preservative component for outdoor timber — copper ions provide broad-spectrum fungicidal and insecticidal protection against decay and boring insects.
Copper stearate's hydrophobic nature improves the rainfast properties and leaf adhesion of copper-based fungicide formulations for controlling crop diseases.
Used as a copper catalyst in polyurethane and specialty polymer synthesis, and as a crosslinking agent in certain rubber formulations requiring copper-mediated reactions.
