Chloroform

CHCl₃  |  CAS: 67-66-3  |  HS: 29031300

Product Description

Chloroform (Trichloromethane) is a dense, non-flammable chlorinated solvent with two primary industrial roles: as a chemical feedstock for HCFC-22 (difluorochloromethane, CHClF₂) — the dominant precursor for PTFE fluoropolymer manufacturing and refrigerant blends — and as a specialty extraction and reaction solvent in pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories. Over 90% of global chloroform production is consumed in HCFC-22 synthesis. As a solvent, it effectively dissolves fats, oils, rubber, and many organic compounds. MITCHEM supplies technical-grade chloroform for chemical synthesis and industrial applications, stabilised with 0.5–1% ethanol to prevent phosgene formation during storage.

Applications by Industry

HCFC-22 & PTFE Manufacturing

Primary feedstock for producing HCFC-22 (CHClF₂) via fluorination with HF; HCFC-22 is the key monomer for PTFE and other fluoropolymer production, and also used directly in refrigeration and AC.

Pharmaceutical Synthesis & Extraction

Used as a reaction solvent in alkaloid extraction, liquid-liquid extraction of pharmaceuticals, and recrystallisation; chosen when higher solvency and density than DCM is required.

Analytical Chemistry & Laboratory

Standard NMR solvent (CDCl₃ is deuterated chloroform), extraction solvent for lipids and hydrophobic compounds, and mobile phase component in normal-phase HPLC and TLC.

Chemical Synthesis Intermediate

Used as a chlorinating agent and intermediate in the production of dyes, pesticides, and specialty organic compounds where controlled chlorination is required.
