Barium Hydroxide Monohydrate
Ba(OH)₂·H₂O | CAS: 22326-55-2 | HS: 28259085
Product Description
Barium Hydroxide Monohydrate is the anhydrous-equivalent powder form of barium hydroxide — preferred over the octahydrate where lower moisture content, higher active content per kilogram, and powder handling are required. It is one of the strongest commercial inorganic bases, used in organic synthesis, CO₂ absorption, sugar refining by the barium saccharate process, and as a base catalyst in specialty chemical manufacturing. MITCHEM supplies technical and pure grades with full MSDS and CoA documentation.
Applications by Industry
Strong base catalyst and reactant in esterification, saponification, and condensation reactions requiring a barium hydroxide base source in anhydrous or near-anhydrous conditions.
Reacts selectively and quantitatively with CO₂ to form insoluble barium carbonate; used in gas analysis, CO₂ scrubbing systems, and carbonation measurement.
Reacts with sucrose to form barium saccharate, allowing selective crystallisation and purification of sugar from impure molasses streams.
Used as a source of barium oxide in specialty glass batch formulations, improving refractive index and optical clarity.
